Lemon & Hemp Seed Pesto

Hemp seeds are used in this pesto as the main source of heartiness, leaving it with an almost creamy consistency. We combined them with both spinach and basil for added goodness and threw in a splash of lemon to give it a tart little twist. It worked fabulously and we now have a new favourite pesto! The best part is how easy this is to make, a child could even do it! We made a giant batch and froze some for another day, perfection.

Lemon and Hemp Seed Pesto from Hemp Gallery Australia


Prep time: 5 minutes
Total time: 5 minutes
Makes 2 cups

  • 2 cups fresh basil

  • 1 cup of baby spinach

  • 1 cup hemp seeds

  • Himalayan pink salt and ground black pepper to taste

  • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic

  • Juice of 1 small lemon

  • 1 tablespoon hemp seed oil

  • ¼ – ½ cup water or veggie broth to bring to desired consistency

Note: The lemon gives this pesto a tangy taste, so if you prefer less tang, cut the lemon down. I like to double or triple the recipe and store in the freezer for quick meals. If using oil, you will need just a splash if using a pure high quality oil like hemp oil because the taste is much more flavourful.

  1. Place all ingredients in a food processor, blender or high speed blender and blend until well mixed, adding water or veggie broth to bring the pesto to desired consistency.

  2. Taste and adjust seasonings to desired taste.

  3. Add to pasta for a great meal.

  4. Enjoy!
