How to Use Hemp Protein Powder
What is Hemp Protein Powder?
Let’s start at the beginning. Hemp is a particular strain of the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike other Cannabis plants, which you may be familiar with, hemp cannot and will not get you high as it contains barely any measurable levels of THC – the psychoactive component. From the hemp plant come hemp seeds, which, fun fact, are technically not a seed but a nut! The more you know!
Hemp seeds have quietly been gaining status as a superfood thanks to their incredibly nutrient rich profile. They are naturally high in fatty acids, amino acids (aka protein) along with other vitamins and minerals, and are a good source of fibre. Hemp protein powder is the result of finely milled hemp seed.
What are the Benefits of Hemp Protein Powder?
Okay, now we’ve gotten the technicalities out of the way, let’s talk about the good stuff: the benefits.
Hemp protein powder is called a protein powder because it is so gosh darn high in protein. It is about 50% protein to be exact, meaning that each serve gives your body about 12g of protein. Hemp protein powder contains all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids your body is unable to produce naturally. This means that hemp protein powder is a complete protein source, a relatively rare feat for a plant-based protein.
As mentioned hemp protein powder contains extremely high levels of essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6, in a 1:3 ratio (considered the optimum ratio). These help with energy production, strengthen the body’s immune system, and promote healthy heart and brain health.
Hemp protein powder is also a great source of vitamin E, vitamin B and vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, beta-carotene, chlorophyll… I could go on.
What does Hemp Protein Powder Taste Like?
If you’re thinking all of that sounds pretty great (of course you are), but are worried you won’t enjoy the taste. Don’t worry! Hemp protein powder has a unique flavour that is often described as nutty or earthy, and we think offers a nice richness when combined with other flavours.
How to Use Hemp Protein Powder
Gone are the days when protein powder was reserved for those trying to look like 1970s Arnold Schwarzenegger. Whether you’re a gym junkie, a couch potato or somewhere in between, everyone can benefit from adding hemp protein powder to their diet. Here are some of our favourite recipes for hemp protein powder.
Smoothies and Bowls
One of the easiest ways to incorporate hemp protein powder into your diet is by adding it to any smoothie or smoothie bowl, for an extra nutritional kick. And the nutty flavour perfectly complements bananas and berries.
Brownies and Cakes
No, not like the pot brownies from your teenage years. Hemp protein powder can be added to baking, by using it as a partial substitute for flour. Next time you’re getting creative in the kitchen, try replacing a quarter of the flour with hemp protein powder. Or, go all the way and use hemp flour instead. Hemp Gallery’s hemp flour is gluten free and contains all the same benefits of hemp protein powder, just in flour form.
Oatmeal and Porridge
There are few things more comforting than a warm bowl of porridge on a winter’s morning. So give your tummy a hug with this delicious (and nutritious) protein porridge recipe. Over a medium high heat, bring 1 cup of your choice of milk to the boil. Once it’s boiling stir in half a cup of oats and two tablespoons hemp protein powder, keep stirring until it’s creamy. Then serve with a squeeze of honey and fresh bananas on top.
