Committee to investigate propects for viable hemp industry

Its proponents often argue that industrial hemp is a crop with real potential for Tasmania, but only if the regulatory environment changes.

The Tasmanian parliament is hoping that the first step towards achieving change may have been taken now, after an amended motion was passed in the House of Assembly yesterday.

It refers consideration of the current state of the hemp industry, as well as what it might need to develop into a viable industry, to a House of Assembly standing committee.

The Greens Kim Booth offered the amendments to the Liberals’ motion and he says it received tripartite support across the Tasmanian parliament.

Industrial Hemp debate goes to State Parliament

The on-going debate about an industrial hemp industry in Tasmania goes before State Parliament today.

Shadow spokesman on Primary Industries Jeremy Rockliff will put a notice of motion to Parliament for a select committee to investigate how to clear the way for Tasmanian farmers to grow hemp as part of their crop mix.

Jeremy Rockliff says the time has come for action to enable farmers to grow the crop which is currently on the poisons list and can’t be legally grown as a food crop.

He says more than enough farmers have attended field days to indicate their willingness to grow industrial hemp and believes the crop could become as important to Tasmania as poppy growing.
