http://gmoevidence.com/qa/ There have been over 50 GM food applications in Australia and they have all been approved by FSANZ, but hemp foods get rejected yet again.
Non THC Hemp foods are legal everywhere in the world for human consumption, except in Australia. It is with some sadness, that COAG committee met last week and did not vote on allowing hemp as a food. Eventhough FSANZ, after years of research into hemp foods, gave it’s full approval as a natural super food.
So why does FSANZ release the following statement for GM foods???

‘It is the responsibility of companies that have developed GM foods to demonstrate the safety of that food and to supply FSANZ with the raw data from scientific studies to prove this…

Food Standards Australia New Zealand approved hemp as food – this is all very well and good but not quite enough! The challenge now is the approval of FOFR. The politicians get to have the final say. The COAG Ministerial Council now has 60 days within which to either request a review or advise that it does not intend to request a review.

This is a repeat of exactly what happened in 2002 and it was rejected by the Council then, with both Abbott and John Howard’s support as ‘hemp foods would send the wrong message to our youth”! It is interesting that around the turn of the century, Australia survived two famines living on hemp foods grown mainly in the Hunter region!!! The message back then was ‘survival’.

Fact sheet on hemp food

http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/scienceandeducation/factsheets/factsheets/hempasafood.cfm

For details:

http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/foodstandards/applications/applicationa1039lowt4708.cfm

Australian hemp farmers need your support!

We cannot let the ignorance of our politicians dictate the food available to the public when it is not in the public interest.

A necessary health food such as hemp has to go through such hurdles when large foreign corporations, freely market genetically modified foods, aspartame products into Australia. These are products that have been banned by other countries for their health risks to the public.

Now, with so many farmers licensed and ready to grow industrial hemp in Australia, for building materials, food and fibre, we should be supporting and harnessing this industry’s potential as a sustainable source of raw material to supply our basic needs.

Industrial hemp could be a large part of the solution for Australia’s self sustainability towards 2030-2050 and beyond.

Its proponents often argue that industrial hemp is a crop with real potential for Tasmania, but only if the regulatory environment changes.

The Tasmanian parliament is hoping that the first step towards achieving change may have been taken now, after an amended motion was passed in the House of Assembly yesterday.

It refers consideration of the current state of the hemp industry, as well as what it might need to develop into a viable industry, to a House of Assembly standing committee.

The Greens Kim Booth offered the amendments to the Liberals’ motion and he says it received tripartite support across the Tasmanian parliament.

To hear how the committee will seek to change the regulatory environment in Tasmania, as well as looking at the Federal regulatory hurdles, download today’s edition of the Tasmanian Country Hour.
